Why Iain Duncan-Smith is wrong about marriage

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:36 am | by

Proposals were issued on Monday by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) in relation to future family law reform, which have been touted as likely Conservative Party policy after the next election. The Conservative think-tank, founded by Iain Duncan Smith MP, has linked rising levels of family breakdown to the increase in cohabiting couples.   To my mind, the CSJ has jumped firmly onto a conservative (with a small c) bandwagon. I would go so far as to say that its proposals are reminiscent of t

Ted and Joe: Gone and Back

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:31 am | by

In Alaska he’s known as “Uncle Ted.” But on his 85th birthday Sen. Ted Stevens’ narrow loss in his re-election bid marks the downfall of an icon and Washington power broker who has been in the Senate since the days of the Lyndon Johnson administration. The winner, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, moves Senate Democrats very close to a filter-proof 60-vote majority. He’s the first Democrat to represent the Senate from Alaska in nearly 30 years. Stevens held an early lead after the Nov. 4 elect

Best Interview Ever

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:15 am | by

Nate Silver, who made a name for himself this year by very accurately predicting the elections at FiveThirtyEight, conducted the best interview ever. It was of a man, John Ziegler, who paid Zogby to conduct a dubious poll to see who was more informed about the “important” issues in the election. Like, apparently, Bill Ayers. Even though no one really cared about the Ayers attacks outside of Ayers himself (who was on Fresh Air today) and the hardcore Republicans who would have never voted for Ba

Why Prostitutes Deserve Free Deodorant

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:13 am | by

Before I begin, I have a confession to make. This article is not going to be about hos and why they need deodorant (though I am sure it’s good for them to use it!) I got the title from a discussion on Twitter that @DominickEvans had with someone concerning the legalization (and the possible tax deductions) of prostitution. I used the title because I needed something that would grab your attention, and really, what is better able to do that than hos and deodorant? The real topic has to do with

Giants have recovered

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:11 am | by

Giants have recovered November 19, 2008 When it happened, John Mara was sitting in the television broadcast booth, cleaning up some papers and preparing to head down to the locker room after what appeared to be a routine win over the Eagles. He could not believe what he was seeing as the most calamitous play in Giants’ history unfolded on the field below. Recent columns 30 years after ‘The Fumble’ November 18, 2008 When it happened, John Mara was sitting in the television broadcast booth, c

Perjury Questions Remain in Alaska Troopergate

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:11 am | by

The republican appointed ethics board claimed on 11/3 (timing no surprise) that Gov. Palin did not break the law in her strong arming and firing of personale related to the trooper gate story. Serious questions remain however about The Gov. and First Gentleman of Alaska. The main question at this point is did the couple commit perjury during the course of the hearings. Perhaps the most troubling piece of evidence is a February 7, 2007, email from Gov. Palin to Monegan. It’s a long, rambling m

Palin mentors Malema cartoon - part 2

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:05 am | by

Yesterday, Wonkie suggested that ANC Youth League’s Julius Malema might not be as simple as he is perceived to be. It remains to be seen how much of Sarah Palin’s strategy Mr Malema will adopt going forward. So far Malema is clearly on track with respect to Palin’s counsel. A spokesperson from the new party Cope (Congress of the People or whatever they are called today) indicated their hope that Malema will continue to grace the media and South African voting public with his violent rhetoric.

Joe Girardi dealing with father’s Alzheimer’s

Written on November 19, 2008 – 1:04 am | by

Joe Girardi dealing with father’s Alzheimer’s November 19, 2008 Before Joe Girardi rose from a high school prospect to big-league catcher to Yankees manager, he was a boy in Peoria, Ill., who wrote a third-grade essay about wanting to be a big-league ballplayer someday, and he was thrilled to call himself Jerry Girardi’s son. The two of them not only played backyard games of catch or caught five or six Cubs games a year at Wrigley Field. They went everywhere together, Joe says now with a laugh
